he is a gentle soul, and one of his favorite past times is nomming on Kitties. Unfortunately, I do no have any felines in my household, and ferrets are not his cup of tea. All of this has made Lorenzo a bit depressed. So a friend of mine has decided to adopt Lorenzo, and soon he will be one his way to sunny California. Where he will have fun in the sun, and has a nice 18lb kitty waiting.

I don't have any "action" shots as of yet, but as soon as he reaches his destination, I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

A friend of mine has seen my Monster ferret beds in the past, and commissioned me to make a cat bed for her. She gave me creative freedom with the design as long as it can fit her big kitty. After a month of working on him off and on, he is finally ready to be sent to her.

I am excited and this really is the largest plushie I have made so far. I learned alot of what works and doesn't while making this.

I really love the way it turned out, and I may make one for my ferrets. :P

He is made of various corduroy and heavy cotton fabric. The "tongue" is a removable cushion and cover, so it can be cleaned when it gets dirty.

I also used plastic boning, to help give it support, but in the end I had to add additional support, which is okay because it looks like "ribs" on the interior.

Of course I was way over zealous with this project I did not take any progress shots. >.< I need to get better at that.

Brain Slug of Awesome

Who doesn't love Futurama?

Inspired by losingstreak brainslug on Craftster.org , I made this one.
I actually made this last Halloween but never posted it, don't know why. I used to work in an office, but they didn't let me wear it as it was "unprofessional", even though clients never see me and I was holed away in the back of the office in what I called "the cave", but whatever.

I love Futurama, as it is one of my favorite series to have playing in the back ground as I craft. I've even developed a habit of wearing while I craft. I was going to have a Sailor Moon Anime marathon, over the years I own most of the series on VHS. And how lucky that I have a working VHS player! I was very excited for my day today, popped in a tape and pushed play. Until... the VHS started making funny noises.... and not the good kind. I am sad to say that it ate one of my tapes, luckily it was not that bad, and the tape did not sustain too much damage.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; interview portion where I spoke with the head jewelry designer, he showed me a series called "BFFs", they were small necklace charms of cute animals directed to 8-10 year olds demoraphics. Each set was the same animal, but two different colors. If anyone knows me, I love all this cute, especially "Kawaii" cute, so I also submitted my interpretation of "BFFs" even though it wasn't part of the initial assignment.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I was a complete nervous wreck before hand, well actually for a few days. It went over really well, and I am confident on the position. Not to mention they gave me homework!

The position is for a Design Assistant for the in house Jewelry Designer for the company. When I first read the job description I thought it would just be an assistant position ( not that I really cared) but once there it is more as an assistant designer if anything. I'm excited, I could not sleep last night!

Now I need to work on my "Homework", which is designing 5+ designs inspired by their best selling products. Truth be told, he was the reason that I got into fashion. Many of his extravagant pieces where inspiration for my senior collection. It is hard for me to even pick a favorite piece in his collections as they are all amazing

I was bored today and procrastinating per usual and for some reason listening to Lady Gaga I decided to doodle on of McQueen's head pieces.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; . It is an "experiment" where one penny will be turned into $1million in food donated to food banks. More information can be found here, where the original Penny was sold for $10, then changed to 100 pennies. The first 100 of the pennies are set aside to be placed in the Post card art which will then later be auctioned off for money to be donated to food banks.

There were no restrictions to the collaboration, so the artist were free to do what they wanted. As long as there was a place where one of the 100 pennies can be attached and that the piece not be larger than an average post card (about 5x7).

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Then like most artists that I know, I was hit with inspiration late one night.

One of the things that I am good at is hand illustration for Jewelry Design. I have always love traditional illustration as a media to work with, and sometimes I feel it is a lost art in today's jewelry industry.

I am a huge fan of the art nouveau, whether it is Alphonse Mucha's prints, or René Lalique jewelry and glassware designs, even the architecture of Victor Horta. So designing a piece that is influenced by the art nouveau style was a given. As as a jeweler, I also wanted to incorporate a way that the purchaser of the piece can also wear it. I am happy with how it turned out, and now, I am creating a wall base where the piece can be displayed.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Pe_iq0FcNlA/S3cRqao1vdI/AAAAAAAAAEo/4X-UaqLKTA0/s1600-h/020+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; With being unemployed at the time, I have been finding myself lacking in the creative department. I do have a slew of projects that I start, but as quickly as I start them, they get pushed aside when I run out of drive.

I used to buy upwards to 10+ Magazines a month, and have built a nice little library, but which money being tight these days, that was one luxury I could live with out. I still buy the occasional magazine though, mainly "W", "WWD" or "Metalsmith".

The great thing about the internet is that it is a vast information that easily accessible. One of my favorite websites that I visit everyday is LOOKBOOK.nu.

The LOOKBOOK.nu is basically a lookbook that is used in the fashion industry, but is a collective of photos and styles of people around the world to freely post their fashion wears online.

The reason I like this site is that you can easily see the current trends in fashion styles as it is right now and where it is going. I love how they style themselves and look amazingly fashionable, and most are not professional. There are quite a few posters who use designer labels, but I love when people mix and match designer with thriftstore finds.

The The Fashion Spot is great fashion community, and often has the latest catwalk couture, tips and stories. My favorite section is the " Sidewalk Cafe", where they have interesting articles. My favorite are the "Street Style, where they show case what photos of people and their styles.

Fashion-Iconography.net is a great reference site for fashion magazine covers. One night when I was bored I clicked through W Maganize covers . I love seeing the evolution of style from the older publications to now.

Fashion Copious is full of great information, especially about models, news, campaigns and designers. It's filled with amazing vibrant images great for inspiration.

Now one of newest favorites places is Modelizing by Julia Chesky. It's a wonderful blog with amazing photos of window displays of designer labels. I, myself, love to window shop, what girl doesn't. Julia's images are beautiful, and allows one to get a closer look at many of the pieces and their detail. One of my favorite posts is of a window display at Barneys in New York, where they used fortune cookies!

*The first image is from Nada Celsha H via LOOKBOOK.nu
*The second images is from VALENTINO: PARIS COUTURE S/S '10 via The Fashion Spot
*The third image is from Modelizing by Julia Chesky.

Le Moderne Du Barry

Right now the Smithsonian is holding an open call contest to celebrate the Hope Diamond's new setting. The contest is basically open to everyone so that people can design thier "perfect" setting.

I wanted to design something that will never be with in my reach. Then I remember about the Diamond Necklace Affair near the end of Louis the XV reign for his Mistress Mdm. Du Barry. The ill-fated necklace was 2,800ct of diamonds, and I felt with today's economy I would design a modern version of that necklace.

The actual setting for the Hope Diamond is similar to it's original setting, but I like the look of the half moon cut diamonds framing the magnificent diamond. The necklace drapes over the neckline and continues around the wearers shoulders. A large 5 ct. oval Diamond mirrors the Hope Diamond, but it is set horizontally since it acts as a hidden clasp for the necklace.

As a big fan of Mucha work, I have always love the borders in his illustrations. His ornate borders not only frame he beautiful models, but also acts as a following line that will lead the viewers eyes around the image. I decided that such framing work would do beautifully with the grandeur of the Hope Diamond. Esthetically wise, the pattern would allow the necklace to look beautifully either on display or on a wearer. Since I did not want to only use Round Brilliant cut stones, I also used various shapes to create the detailing.

Since this was designed to be a modern version of Mdm. Du Barry's necklace, I wanted to give it some Versailles flair as you would. One design that was very prominant during that time would be a "Fleur de Lis". To create a simple "Fleur de Lis", I simply used two pear shape cut stones, topped with a marquis. Not wanting to stop there I decided to top the design with clover shape created by four trillion cut stone, as well as having a diamond set in it's center and between the "leaves".

The only thing that goes well with diamonds are simply more diamonds.

I submitted my design, and I can't wait to see it on the web site. We shall see if any good comes from it. :)

Oh well.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I can no longer continue my Ring-A-Day. Yeah, I tried. I made the applique some time ago, and it just sat on my drafting table waiting to be put on something. Well, since money is low, and made some of my gifts this year, and this one was one of it. Shopping for kids is hard, especially for ones that you only see a few times a year. I am always hesitant on buying toys, as I remember most toys I would play with for a short time and then forget.

I decided on a crayon roll-up, since Carter should be starting pre-school, and the last time I saw him he liked to color. Most kids like to color right?

I don't know, if you can tell by this post, I do not have children, nor have much experience with them.

As an art nerd, I had to organize the colors in ROYGBIV order.

New Blog, and the New year.

I've decided to create a new blog to help me with my creative slump. As I have said before, I am currently jobless, and being such, I have felt my creativity going down. Sure I've been crafting, but I have not done anything to push myself as a designer. While laying in bed last night, waiting for the new year I have decided that I need a project, something that will force me to think and create, essentially going back to basics. Before I new it, Ring-A-Day was born. I am using this project as a way to keep my creative juices flowing in a way. I will still update this blog.

It's a New Year, clean slate, only time will tell what 2010 will hold for me.

TUTORIAL: Oatmeal Canister to Knitting Crochet Organizer

Final got around to finishing the tutorial for the Oatmeal Canister in my last post. You can download a full PDF tutorial here-->> Knitting and Crochet Organizer It's a large file, so when you open the PDF in your web browser it might take a bit. You can also right-click to download the PDF as well.

If you don't want to down load the PDF The full Tutorial is posted on Craftster.org in my original thread.

Now that the end of the year is coming up, I am starting to think of the what is to come. Right now, the logic side of my brain is telling me " job... Job... JOB!!!", but the artistic side is say, "Relax, draw, create." So I feel like I am at a cross-road, and I am thinking of what to do to relieve these feelings. I started making a list, with pros and cons, and goals for this new year.

I guess I shall wait and see, right?

Is there an organizer tutorial for ones life?

Trying to keep my self busy in cold dreary days, if not I feel like I may go insane, if I am not already there. I am the great procrastinator, and I always start projects but never seem to finish. I am hoping that in 2010 it will be different.

Many things have changes in the last few months of my life. For one, my work decided to quite on me, which should be good as an artist, but has turned out to be my Kryptonite.

Between job search, resumes send outs, it has be hard for me to keep my spirits up, let alone getting the drive to create. I should be happy as now I have the freedom to go after what I really want, but "real" life gets in the way.

Yesterday was one of those days... On a whim I decided to stop to looking for the meaning of my life, and try not to organize 26 years of discombobulation. I should take it one day at a time. I got off my rear and decided to finish something that I had started about 5 months ago, a knitting needle/ crochet hook organizer.

I used oohmybees Knitting Bucket Organizer that she posted to Crafster.org as inspiration. Since I never got around to buying a bucket to make the <a href="http://"http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=292678.0">Knitting Bucket Organizer , what I did have was a bunch of empty Oatmeal canisters ( my boyfriends eats about a bowls a day so we go through alot of Oatmeal). So I came up with this.

It fits a bit snug, but I am able to slip my crochet hooks in, but I think if I remake it, I'll add a bit more .

I am pretty proud of it, and even though it is only one project, but it is a step forward in the right direction.

Craftster Best of 2008!

My Hestia Plush made it onto Craftster Best of 2008 list for plush dolls and toys!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I ride the train alot, it can take me upward to an hour to get to work sometimes :(. I sometimes take my crocheting with me, but now I've been taking my embroidery with me. I use to just shove every thing in a ziploc baggy and be done with it. Then I got an idea to make this book type of carrying case. It's not really well put together at this point, I was kind of just going on the fly with this, as well as my sewing machine was dying on me ( I guess it's time to buy a new one :( ).

it has three flaps that fold inward to help keep every thing in so nothing falls out.

My scissors, seam ripper are nicely held in place, as well as having a little built in pin cushion

A section for all my needles and a button loop to hold my loop.

And the other side has a pocket for my cardboard thread thimbles, as well as a place to put my pencil. I added a ribbon across the back last minute. I thought it was a great idea to have a place that I can a binder clip to hold my cards for the threads to keep them handy instead of having to reach into the pocket all the time.

This is just a prototype for right now. So I wanted to get every one's opinion of things that I can fix if I do decided to make these to sell.

On a project spree.

I started on this plushie last Thursday or Friday, and have worked on it non-stop and finally finished it today. I would like to introduce to you, Hestia the HedgeHog.

The hardest part of this plushie and the least enjoyable was her "weave", and I do mean weave since the yarn knots are woven and sewn to each other as well as to the actual plush. So this her hair is not going to fall out any time soon.

I am thoroughly enjoying the act of embroidery, and am happy with the way this came out. I already posted her to Craftster.org, and I am greatly please with all the good feed back that I am getting. I feel that I am getting better and definately more patient with my projects since I started crafting. I think it's mainly because I am getting more patient with my projects.

Actually I may be getting more confident with my crafting would be a better thing to say. I have never been an out going person with my designs, even with my jewelery, and always fear that people will not like what I produce. That, at times, has prevented me from showing off my work, such as forums, for fear of embarassing myself.

Baby steps I suppose.

Still inching closer to open an Etsy shop though.
-------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT TO ADD!!!

Hestia made it to the top five in the 2nd Annual Softies Awards!

A moment to breath.

It has been awhile since I updated this blog. Since the last time I have up rooted from Savannah, GA and are now slowly becoming a local in one of the many neighborhoods of Chicago. We are still trying to get comfortable, but I am still waiting on starting on a new job, so right now I feel like as if I have been on an extensive vacation. I kind of miss working in a studio enviroment and am a bit anxious to start making jewelery again. I still have many earrings that I made in my last month of as a studio tech, I just need to put together everything to open up my etsy shop. The good that has come from it, is that I have been crafting more and frequenting Craftster.org.

I am particularly proud of a plush doll that I made for one of my favorite Professors from SCAD. She was ready to give birth when I left, and she didn't know if they were having a girl or a boy, which made it a little difficult for me to decided what to make. So decided to make something very gender neutral and a classic design, a teddy bear. Made of wool felt and simpled embroidered features with a small vest, she loved it. I love the combination of this hue of orange and brown.

I'm currently working on a hedgehog plushie, much like the one I made for my friend Carlos's little girl this past Christmas, only a smaller. I should be done with it sometime tomorrow.

It's so hard right now for me to work in the apartment. Mainly because all of my supplies are materials are still in boxes. When we moved we just brought the bare essentials and no furniture. I'm currently sitting on a "couch" that I have fashioned together with boxes that house my books. The good thing is that we are 15 minutes from Ikea via the expressway, and already planning what to buy and out to organizes my new crafting/ studio area.

But for right now, I am still keeping up with my embroidery sample and chrocheting.

A Ferret Eating Monster Bed OH MY!!

Bed in use

Even comes complete with a back door.

I posted my makings on Crafster.org and got alot of good comments, and people asking for a tutorial.

So I bring you my very first tutorial.

I've never really done a tutorial for anything so here it goes. So bare with me, this is my first tutorial.

Click on the image to download the PDF tutorial. or Click here.

This bed is a little different from the first one. I made a few adjustments to the to the design so the ferrets don't roll out of the mouth. Granted it is quite hilarious seeing ferret half asleep falling out of a bed that looks like it's eating them. Now the bottom is a bit more deeper, and the moth isn't as wide. Of course this pattern can be altered any way the maker feels like it.

I would love to see what other people make with this pattern.

I've been attempting to teach myself illustrator in the last few months. I'm starting to get the hang of it, and really enjoy the look and feel of vector images. Of course, I had to make myself a desktop back ground using Illustrator in an obvious pick theme for Valentines Day, click on the image to go to the full background.

Adobe Illustrator is so clean, and my favorite aspect is the ability to resize you image with out it pixelating. Even though I have always been a traditional art type of gal, Drafting table pen and paper, there is a certain graphic desire that I achieve while working directly on the computer.

Especially in this day and age where everything is becoming digitalized. Granted this doesn't mean that I will be putting my pencil down in lieu of a Wacom Tablet, but use it to further my style in design.

Green is the new Black

Every one wants to be green as if it is the newest fashion trend to hit the streets. In a way it is good, because for one in my life that people actually decided it was a good idea to be good the the planet.

I have always tried to do my best when it came to recycling, but if anyone who ever lived in Savannah GA, recycling is as good as an urban myth. Thankfully in the last few years, a small group of residents have been banning together to get the ball rolling on this issue.

This year my goal is to try and cut down on the number of plastic bags that I get when I go grocery shopping. I looked around for grocery tote bags to buy, but didn't like any that I saw. Either they were bulky with a bad screen print canvas, or a thing mesh bag that I knew would not last. As least Wal-mart and Kroger are begining to sell these bags to their customers. In the end I ended up making my own from a denim fabric that I have had for years.

They had to be simple and not to flashy, my first attempt to make a tote with our a pattern. I even added a strap so they can easy storage. They get the job done. The only thing I find annoying is when I go shopping, I tend to use the self check out all the time, and I can't bag the groceries until the end, and some people tend to get irritated because I'll stand there for a minute longer than I would have if I just used the plastic bags.

Oh well.

Victoire de Castellane

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_Pe_iq0FcNlA/R2bWY5r2q1I/AAAAAAAAABY/ZAZfUy2Disg/s320/oui.i.minijpg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145035347607333714" />

My college, Savannah College of Art and Design, is hosting the yearly SNAG Conference this coming spring. Due to this the studio is having a MAJOR uplift, right now the studio space resembles that of a ware house that a French mime power tool fanatic interior designer got a hold of. Still confused, thing of stark white walls, pure black accents, and seemingly out of place large power tools.

Enough of that, one of my favorite jewelry designers may be a guest to speak at the conference, Victoire de Castellane of DIOR Joaillerie. Right now it's just a rumor, but if it is in fact true. Hopefully, there will be an opportunity for portfolio reviews.

After the holidays, I and setting up a time line for the next three months, including the SNAG conference and portfolio reviews for potential jobs. Including, make two more lines of jewelry and finally setting up shop over at Etsy, along with setting up a home studio layout for Chicago which also includes looking for an apartment.

It funny, 6 months ago, I was talking about moving to Chicago with Rob, and it seemed so far away, and now I feel like I am running around trying to make arrangements, figuring out moving expenses, and tying up all the loose ends of my life here in Savannah Georgia.

Integrating into adulthood is some what of a tedious task, and I am not fond of it at all.

So much to do, and not enough time in the world to do it.

Update on my plushies, they are almost done, and I am actually happy by the way they came out. Now my new goal for 2008 is to teach myself how to embroider, and apartment search in Chicago.

Plushies and Softies, Oh my!

I haven't made a new piece of jewelry for a while, considering that the studio is under renovation due to the SNAG conference this coming March. In order to keep myself from going insane needed a new project of sorts. I stumbled across this craft blog, futuregirl , and loved her little sea creatures that she made. While cruising the vast of the internet and various websites, I decided that making plushies would be a great christmas present for my friends children.

So first and foremost, design. I wanted to stay away from the normal everyday animals, such as teddy bears and rabbits. So I settled for and octopus, and a hedgehog.

Sitting down, I came up with Oxnard and Penelope.

We shall see if they come out or not.

"The Orange step"

I was driving down to the studio a few days ago and notice that they were hanging what seemed like giant prints along the walk way in Forsyth park. Having only to work a night shift at the studio today I decided to take a look and find out what was going one.

I was surprised not to find giant digital prints but actual 20 x10 foot paintings (total 128 in all) decorating all the paths of Forsyth Park. It was amazing. The only artwork that I have ever scene out side of galleries have been murals and such, but these works are beautiful. They have a Pollock mets cubism feel to them. The strokes of the drip painting along side the large vivid collaboration of color merging together to make such beautiful work. With that, but having them set in an open air setting made the experience even more so amazing. I got the chance to walk up to each and every painting and got to examine them which I never allowed to do in a museum setting with out fear of setting off alarms. You could see the how ever stroke that makes the paintings has it's own energy and life to it.

The artist's name is Kiril Jeliazkov and was a M.F.A graduate of SCAD I believe.

More about the project can be found on the ConnectSavannah article.

One thing that I did find interesting about installing the work in the park is that people started to walk in the park as if it were a gallery. All my years of living in this town I had always seen people walk through the park, and not really keep on the pathway alot, I know I didn't. So I found it hillarious watching people walking along the paths almost afraid to even break way from the sidewalks and walk up to the paintings themselves. Of course, I could see these people are the people that just tend to walk through a museum and not really stop and observe what is infront of them.

Not me. It took me and Rob about two hours to look at ever piece of work that was displayed. I was angery at myself for not double checking my digital camera and seeing if it had it's memory card so I only took a few photos with it's internal memory. Those can be found on my flickr account.

This little piggy

Went to market.

I went to Primary Art supply sometime this summer and they were selling these little guys for only $o.15 cents a piece. I fell in love with them and first thing to pop in my head was, " I wonder how these would cast?" So as I was standing there awaiting to sell my soul for over priced art supplies I bought five of them.

I was stressed that day because of classes and decided to relax and work at the bench and make something that WASN'T for a class for once. I had an idea to make one with wings from a butterfly that I caught earlier that day but want didn't want to put in the effort (another project for another day).

"I shall name him... Heubert"

So instead I wanted a piggy ring, but not just a any sort of piggy ring, my own little petting zoo ring.

Of course I did fancy the thought of going up to people and asking them, "Would you like to pet my piggy?" Often I was met with a stare of confusion, and at that point I would raise my hand and say, " His name is Heubert, and he loves people".

I know, I'm wierd.

The First day of creativity.

This blogger is my new toy. Even though I have surfed the World Wide web since the early 90's, have posted a many entries on LiveJournal ofAngst teenage drama, I finally come to the conclusion to try and get myself on a creative whim again, and get a more mature form of blogging. So good bye LiveJournal, how I knew you well.

To start off, an introduction.

I am a metalsmith by trade, studio technician by night, procrastinator extrodinaire, and soon to be graduate of SCAD with a B.F.A in Metals and Jewelry. 24 year old Female that lives in the south but soon will relocate to my city of choice, Chicago, but originally from the southwest. Ferret enthusiast with a now lovable trio, Hannah, Pixal, and Marcel du Champ who used to be a quintet ( I lost two ferrets this past month, a bonded pair, Asuka and Mr. Flaco).

So I guess this would be my design blog? I really don't know if that is the proper way of classifying it, but it's the best that I can come up with right now. One of the new ways of passing time in my busy schedule is reading up on my favorite blogs on Google Reader (which is amazing and time saver of awesomeness) sites such as Apartment Therapy, Moco loco, and Design Sponge.

Back to creativity. I started to keeping up my DeviantArt account for metal smithing, I always feel that I will always be drowned out by the countless anime fanatics that flood the pages of DA. Granted I could spend hours on end going threw entries, favorite-ing pieces hoping that people will favorite mine to get more exposure, but face it, I'm a bit busy for that so here I am on Blogger.

What this site will be a place for me to show off my work, finshed and in progress as well, things that I find interesting ( no viral videos, that is why we have sites like ebaumsworld and YouTube), generally a creative blog of design and art.

At least that is my intention.
